Marc Withnall

November 23rd, 2010 admin No comments

Prominent Queensland-based property developer Marc Withnall has revealed his long-running passion for horse racing and in particular the Golden Slipper Stakes in Sydney, which he has been an avid follower of since childhood.

Now a highly regarded Sunshine Coast businessman, Marc Withnall has attributed his love of horses and even his entrepreneurial success to his days as a fledgling punter under the watchful gaze of his grandfather, another racing enthusiast.

I caught up with Marc Withnall at his Queensland-based horse farm and as we sat down over-looking the dozen or so collection of mares and fillies and two young foals, Marc explained how his business success was rooted in a lucky punt on the Golden Slipper way back in 1975.

“I still remember it well, I was only a little tacker when my grandfather took me into town to take a punt on the Golden Slipper,” Marc revealed candidly.

“He  asked me to pick a horse and I just picked a name I liked – Toy Show was the horses name, I’ll never forget it! Anyway my Pop placed a one dollar bet on that horse for me and a few dollars more on another horse for himself.”

“We listened to the race on the radio back at Pop’s farm. He had no TV, never had an interest in the television, and he couldn’t believe his ears when my horse won. Neither could I, I felt like I had just won a million bucks. I’ve followed the Golden Slipper ever since and I’ve won a few bucks too…”

Marc Withnall also admitted that he enjoyed a regular punt on the Golden Slipper and got the chance to go to Sydney a number of years later. Nowadays, he never misses it and he is already looking forward to next year’s race.

“I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Business takes a back seat on the first Saturday in April – the glitz, the glamour, the atmosphere and the occasional bet, I love it,” he added.

2010 Golden Slipper Tips

April 2nd, 2010 admin No comments

Military Rose – 1
Crystal Lily – 2
Shaheeq – 3

I think Ambers Waltz is the benchmark for this years 2010 Golden Slipper form. The first couple of favourites have all ran against Ambers Waltz and Military Rose is the horse which won by the biggest margin 3.8 lengths. She as also continued to improve at each run, and she is only second run back whilst other contenders have been up some time running in the Blue Diamond 1.5 months ago. There is many knockers of the Blue Diamond form, however, I think it will hold up today and we did see Willow Creek win last week.

My suggested bet - Box Quinella the 3 horses listed above and I am confident you’ll have some money to indulge in a few extra Easter Eggs tomorrow

April 2nd, 2010 admin No comments

The rosehill track continues to improve as we draw closer to the 2010 Golden Slipper. In the past 24 hours the track has improved dramatically from a Heavy 8 to a Slow 6. There is a chance the track could be Dead by the time of the big race. This is good news as every horse should have their chance.

Golden Slipper 2010 Track Conditions

April 1st, 2010 admin No comments

Throw away your formguide as rain continues to fall at Rosehill and the track for the 2010 Golden Slipper is currently rated a Heavy 8 for the big race on Saturday. Track Manager has indicated that track upgrade is unlikely. This is good news for bookmakers as this throws the race wide open. Most contenders are not tested on the heavy track and the wet conditions will suit horses which can run a strong 1400-1600 metres. Given the number of speedsters in the field its time to look for value and backmarkers

Bright Expectations firms in 2010 Golden Slipper market

March 29th, 2010 admin No comments

Bright Expectations trained by Gai Waterhouse rocketed into 2010 Golden Slipper contention with an emphatic win at Rosehill on Saturday. Did he beat much or has he improved many lengths with blinkers. I think a bit of both. Problem for bright expectations is there is lots of speed in the 2010 Golden Slipper so he will probably not get the easy lead that he did last Saturday. Horses like th flying machine Chance Bye and Crystal Lily will make sure he has to work in the 2010 Golden Slipper to get the lead in the big race
